Abstract

This paper is a response to the article “Aportaciones al estudio contrastivo de los marcadores del discurso por lo visto y en efecto”, by Victoriano Gaviño Rodríguez, published in ELA 58. This response raises several comments and questions and sets out some theoretical and methodological differences with the analysis proposed by Gaviño. Specifically, the article addresses issues like the comparison of discourse markers with a closer or more distant meaning, the role of the extralinguistic information and its inclusion in the rigorous description of the meaning of discourse markers, and the methodology and useof data in the study of these linguistic units. The article aims to lay out several concerns and critical thoughts with the objective of opening a dialogue on issues that are central for the study of discourse markers in Spanish.
