Conceptual metaphor theory and deliberate metaphor theory: Supplementary proposals?

Benjamín Cárcamo Morales

Abstract

From a cognitive perspective, different proposals have been made to account for the role of metaphors in language. This article offers a comparative analysis of two different proposals: the conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) and the deliberate metaphor theory (DMT) considering the assumptions and applications of each. Both theories are described in their own terms; then suggestions are made seeking to find common grounds shared by both theories and demarcate their research scope. The present analysis contributes to establish links between both theories. In addition, it opens lines for further research that strengthen the study of metaphors and their relationship with language, thought, and communication.
