Abstract
In this article I discuss the topic of verbal aspect and its periphrastic expression in Spanish and Italian; with specific reference to standard speech in Mexico City; on the one hand; and; on the other; to standard speech in the Italian cities of Rome; Milan and Turin; which have specific selection criteria as prestigious variations of presentday Italian. These variations actually correspond to the Central-Southern and Northern axis of the Italian Peninsula; and they are the ones imposed on the remaining regions of Italy in the linguistic awareness of native speakers of Italian. The purpose of this article is twofold: to offer a general overview of aspect; on the one hand; and to point out some characteristics of the standard which is the object of my study; on the other.
