Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the inverted word order in the teaching of Russian as a foreign language. Our hypothesis based on the classroom observations is that Spanish-speaking students tend to interpret any sentence in Russian as having a canonic word order; i.e.; SVO. We take a linguistic typology viewpoint and a universal grammar approach as theoretical bases which allow us to compare Russian and Spanish from these two perspectives. Then the paper describes the experiment carried out at the CELE and discusses the results of this research which could confirm the hypothesis as to the difficulties in processing the inverted word order by students of Russian.
