LEXICAL MORPHOLOGY IN MEXICO’S CURRENT SPANISH: NEOLOGY AND PRODUCTIVITY

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the project Morfolex (Zacarías Ponce de León, 2009-2016) on the analysis and classification of neologisms recorded in Mexico through various means. Morfolex was founded in 2008 at the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and aims to study the morphology and vocabulary of the Spanish language. In line with this objective, the criteria used to calculate the productivity of the various word-formation schemes used in this variety
of Spanish are described here. From the productivity calculations, it is possible to gain an insight of the most common lexical structures and the vitality of the Mexican Spanish.
