Helena S. Belío-Apaolaza is a Distinguished Researcher for the Spanish Language Department at the University of Salamanca, Spain, where she teaches Linguistics and Sociolinguistics courses. She previously taught Spanish language at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United States. Her work on applied linguistics to language teaching and learning is focused on three main subjects: emotion and identity in heritage language learners; linguistic integration of migrants and refugees; and nonverbal communication, where she conducts empirical and pedagogical research to study the learning of L2 gestures. She also studies the linguistic nature of emblematic gestures, considering the semantic, cognitive, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic elements that take place in their use in communication.

Natividad Hernández Muñoz is Associate professor of Linguistics of the Spanish Department at the University of Salamanca, Spain. She completed her Ph.D. in Hispanic philology at the University of Salamanca. Her research interests include psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and Spanish Applied Linguistics. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Salamanca, Penn State University (USA), Cairo University (Egypt) and the University of San Francisco Javier de Chuquisaca (Bolivia). She has been a visiting researcher at the University of York and the University of Swansea (United Kingdom). She has published four books (last one, La diversidad del español y su enseñanza, Routledge 2021) and more than twenty papers in peer reviewed journals (such as Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, Foreign Language Annals, Language Teaching Research, European Journal of Cognitive Psychology, Spanish in Context, SKY: Journal of Linguistics, Porta Linguarum, etc.), and several book chapters (Springer, Peter Lang, etc.).
