Gramática pedagógica del artículo definido en inglés

Abstract


This paper attempts to set out the linguistic bases of a pedagogic grammar of the definite article in English. Aimed at teachers of English; it is concerned with those aspects of the system which are problematic for the Spanish speaker; and which at the same time can be given pedagogical treatment. After a brief analysis of how articles function in English; the two most suitable areas for a pedagogic grammar are further explored; that of generic reference at the discourse level and that of coocurrence restrictions in the noun phrase.
