Las líquidas erres del español

Leopoldo Valiñas

Abstract

n a first moment; in this paper I present Harris' arguments that support his idea of the existence of only one Spanish non-lateral liquid (the alveolar flap). In a second moment; I point out some systematic constants of the Spanish consonantal system (from the structural point of view) in order to argue against Harris' claims. In this sense; this paper has to ends: on the one hand; to postulate that Spanish has two non-lateral liquids and on the other that the feature [continuant] is the pertinent one that distinguishes the Spanish vibrants.
