El pima bajo de Onavas: sus diferencias con respecto al pima de la montaña

Zarina Estrada Fernández

Abstract

Pima Bajo is a Uto-Aztecan language spoken in the Central part of the Sierra Madre Occidental betweeen the States of Sonora and Chihuahua; and until a few years ago; it was also spoken at Onavas; a small town on the rio Yaqui. The study of the Pima Bajo from Onavas has been possible thanks to the field notes that Ken Hale and Robert John Comell recorded during 1965; and 1971. Based on the study of these data; I provide a characterization of the Pima Bajo from Onavas; and provide a comparison of the variety of Pima Bajo spoken in the mountains so as to isolate their differences. The analysis of data provides information on the dialect variation of Pima Bajo from these two places. Finally; some considerations about the linguistic classification of the Pima Bajo from Onavas are revised.
