La interpretación simultánea y el dispositivo de autocorrección

Georgeanne Weller Ford

Abstract

Various aspects of simultaneous interpretation have long interested linguists and psychologists alike. An understudied area which deserves particular attention is what I call the self-monitoring self-correcting mechanism used by interpreters. I posit that the constant revision by the interpreter of what he said throughout the interpretation attests to his active; ongoing and conscious participation in the communication process. In no way should he be considered a mere channel or device. In this first stage of the research project; results are offered from a questionnaire distributed to professional interpreters in Mexico concerning their use of this mechanism during simultaneous interpretation and from analysis of tapes of real-life performances with samples of this correction device.
