Juan M. Lope Blanch

Abstract

The identification of the origin of certain voices — such as cogote: nah. cocotl or esp. coca ‘cabeza’; and tocayo: nah. tocayutl ‘nombre’ or lat. tu Caius — has caused polemics; which in themselves are insignificant; but has revealed predispositions among linguists interested in spoken Latin American Spanish; prejudices that have been inclined to take a side in favor or against the possible influence of the Indoamerican languages on Spanish.
