Abstract

By all natural and cultural standards; Mexico is a land of exceptional diversity; and it has the first place in the world regarding its quantity of amphibians and reptiles. This peculiarity causes the existence of certain quantity of common names which denominate those animals studied in herpetology. However; we should not only consider the species in its context; but we should also analize the words that denominate them; because; in the end; they express origjns; roots; traditions and cultural contacts; which have been reflected in many works that have been created and recreated by multiple generations: In this work we made a study regarding certain units of mexican herpetofauna; that proceed from native languages. We think that this relation herpetology - mexicanisms is of interest for specialists in translation; interpretation; linguistics; filology; culturology and of course; herpetology.
