Abstract

In this paper I present three important aspects of the noun phrase in Yucatec Maya: 1) the constituents that form the noun phrase; 2) the syntactic relatonship established among them; and 3) the relative order in which they are structured in this language. The importance of this paper lies in the fact that it demonstrates that the determinants in Yucatec Maya operate according to a definiteness hierarchy such that they are ordered in the noun phrase in accordance with the degree of definiteness that they impose upon the noun.
