Transculturación e impacto cultural

Abstract

A part of a minority ethnic group in transition is always at a disadvantage in cases of cultural change or language shift. On the other hand; another part of the same group is apt to benefit from the cultural and linguistic change and for that reason encourages the other members to accept it. Ceasing to use an indigenous language might result in culture shock for some members of the minority ethnic community. In this article; the notion of culture shock will be defined and examples will be given to demonstrate the appearence of the phenomenon in minority ethnic groups; with a special focus on public education. It is believed that language policy in the public school could positively influence the students' achievement.
