La responsabilidad del productor ante la lengua: préstamos; 'lavado' y liberalismo lingüístico

Abstract

This paper analyzes the role of translation in a time of permisiveness regarding linguistic encroachment; especially from English to Spanish. A comparison with the criticism aimed at translators during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (when they were accused of Gallicizing the Spanish language) suggests that; while we can hardly say that translators are solely responsible for the growing penetration of English today; the <b>process of translation</b> does legitimize the introduction of foreign usage. The author attemps; in view of this; to reassess the role and the responsibility of the professional translator.
