Lingüísitca y enseñanza de la lengua materna

José G. Moreno de Alba

Abstract

a) In spite of the innate character of linguistic capacities; it is indispensable; if the communicative abilities are to be fully developed; that the mother tongue should be systematically taught in schools; b) The best way to achieve this is through intense graded practice of oral and written expression; c) Grammatical content should not be completely forgotten: it should rather be taught in alive and functional way and in 'doses' of a suitable size.
d) Information on linguistic topics is at least as important as grammar; if not more so; e) The teacher; both at primary and secondary level; needs to acquire during his training sufficient knowledge of grammar and of general and applied linguistics. This means that consideration needs to be given to increasing the time devoted to this area in the curriculum of primary and secondary teacher education colleges.
