Abstract

In this article we present an index of 101 bachelor degree programs and 21 post-graduate programs in the areas of linguistics; applied linguistics; translation (oral and written); literature; languages and language teaching found in the statistical catalogues published by the National Association of Institutions of Higher Education (ANUIES). These data provide information about the present state of professional education in some areas related to applied linguistics. In addition we present some aspects of six programs in linguistics and applied linguistics found in RedUNAM (UNAM’s educational network). The article consists of four parts: 1) Previous work and background; 2) the state of professional development in areas related to applied linguistics; 3) the objectives and focus of six linguistics and applied linguistics programs and 4) some perspectives for further studies. The analysis of the six programs provides a clearer idea of their orientation; while making evident the need for an analysis of the curricula of the remaining programs. A data base of degree programs has been prepared by the CELE’s DLA (Applied Linguistics Department) with the information sent by the programs’ coordinators. Its electronic publication will promote their study and recognition in Mexico and other countries. The authors answer some questions about the programs and raise other issues concerned with professional development in the field which demand further study.
