El bilingüismo de los niños mexicanos en Los Ángeles; California

Lidia Guzmán Zurita

Abstract

This report; from a study which is in its initial stage; deals with some sociolinguistic aspects many Mexican children emigrating to the United States have to face; such as living in a multicultural and multilingual society; and the possibility of getting bilingual education; which may imply very different patterns of life. Being in contact; languages and cultures influence each other and so; we may find that when children arrive in the United States they not only learn English; which they need in order to continue their education; but at the same time they also acquire some features of the variety of Spanish spoken in the American area they live in. By interviewing a group of children; we aim to find out the attitudes of the children to aspects like speaking two languages and other similar issues.
