Abstract

The concept of ‘language’ is not clear; not even for professional linguists. In order to analyze what has been called "language" in Western culture; it is necessary not to consider it as an hypostasis; as something with its own and autonomous life. We need to observe languages from different points of view: systemic; social; cultural; political and ideological. Some examples of well-known "languages" are useful to do so; and this text exposes and reviews them.

Keywords

language; dialect; hypostasis; standardization
