Francisco Castillo N., Ma. del Pilar Cerdeira Hernández

Abstract

The topic of this article, located in the interaction process, is the participation in the Spanish as a second language classroom. It presents the results obtainedfrom the description of the participation patterns of six foreign students learning Spanish as a second language in a language center at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). For such description, the Allwright’s model (1984) was used, as well as the following instruments: IA (1960) and FLINT (1971). The students were observed for six hours in two different subjects: Grammar and Conversation. The results showed that the participation pattern is linked to the teacher's requirements and it was conditioned by four factors: 1) The type of class, 2) the methodology used, 3) his/her personality, and 4) his/her teaching style.
