An analysis of the Facebook like reaction from interaction studies

Abstract


This article analyzes the use of the like reaction button in Facebook by applying theoretical concepts from Pragmatics and Conversation Analysis. The use of like is described as a responsive act whose interpretation (either literally, as a positive assessment, or non-literally) depends on both features of the interaction and pragmatic principles, specifically, the concepts of conditional relevance, preferred
/ non-preferred answer, pursuit of relevance, and the profile of participants and their relationships within the social networking, all of which explain the use and the literal / non-literal interpretation of the like reaction button in Facebook interactions.
