Estudio de un corpus de conversación profesional: el uso de la metáfora en los estudios de arquitectura de habla inglesa

Paloma Úbeda Mansilla

Abstract

Based upon the analysis of a conversational corpus collected by the author, the following work will attempt to show the wide use by architects of metaphor as a cognitive tool that facilitates the communication and transmission of ideas during their conversations at work, and will propose the didactic application of the obtained material to the teaching of English for students of Architecture. The study is based on a corpus of almost 3 hours of recording at four macro-practices in the city of London, with a total of 33,319 words. The contexts of language production are analysed, as well as the metaphorical expressions and the corresponding conceptual metaphors and their source and target domains. The grammatical and pragmatical aspects related to metaphor production are also identified. Finally, the use of metaphor for L2 teaching to students of Architecture is proposed.
