Focus and Scope

Estudios de Lingüística Aplicada (ELA), or, Studies in Applied Linguistics, is a biannual joural whose core objective is to publish and disseminate research works related with practical problems where language plays an essential role. specialized, previously unpublished, original texts with high academic standards, written either in Spanish or English. ELA also includes reviews of recent books which are considered relevant in the field of linguistics.

Since its creation in 1981, ELA's mission has been to promote research and encourage knowledge-building about the ways in which language is present in social life. ELA has been characterized as an avant-garde and pioneering journal in applied linguistics. Over the years, the journal has maintained a high research level, and has made it possible to discuss the emergent topics of linguistics.

We are committed to the development of theories and methods that contribute to the reinforcement of applied linguistics as a key field for the explanation of topics of global relevance. Therefore, we invite all scholars, professionals and students interested in the study of language to take part in this research forum, be it as readers or authors.

In ELA we recognize applied linguistics as a wide field of research and reflection that is constantly being renewed and that encompasses different linguistic practices of social interest, such as language development, language in use, language in social life, the relationship between language and social conflicts, among others. ELA includes inter-, multi- or trans-disciplinary research works about different languages, in areas such as:

  • Learning and acquisition
  • Discourse studies
  • Language planning and policy
  • Language teaching
  • Intercultural studies
  • Bilingualism and multilimgualism
  • Action research
  • Corpus, computational, forensic or clinical linguistics
  • Lexicology, terminology and lexicography
  • Translation and interpreting

All the articles and notes published in ELA undergo a double-blind peer review process  (see Policies). In turn, the book reviews undergo an editorial revision before their publication.

ELA is a journal edited at the National School for Languages, Linguistics and Translation of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. It is an open access (see Policies) indexed (see Indexing) journal, published in both printed and electronic formats.

Types of Submissions

Articles

ELA considers as articles those texts that report the results of empirical, applied or theoretical research that account for a scientific contribution in the sense that the obtained results are solid and groundbreaking and/or that the ensuing theoretical approaches are innovative. All the articles that are submitted to ELA undergo the review process.

Notes

Notes are texts that develop a well-defined problem, or that constitute a report based upon teaching experience, or that put forth and discuss the current state of the research on a particular topic, or that present preliminary results of an ongoing research project. All the notes that are submitted to ELA undergo the review process.

Book reviews

This section includes texts that bring to light recent publications in a brief and critical way. The aforementioned publications should be recent and relevant for the readers of ELA.

Book notices

Book notices are texts that announce new publications with a brief description of their contents.

Structure

ELA is constituted by an advisory board, an editorial board (led by its coordinator), and an editor.

  • The Advisory Board is made up of distinguished specialists of international renown in the field of linguistics. They provide scientific support to the journal and promote ELA within their academic communities.

  • ELA’s Editorial Board is comprised of seven renowned scholars in the field of linguistics; three of them are affiliated to the sponsoring school, the National School of Languages, Linguistics and Translation of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (ENALLT-UNAM); and the remaining four belong to other schools within or outside the UNAM. These scholars are periodically and gradually renewed. One of the members serves as the coordinator of the board.
The Editorial Board is ultimately responsible for all the decisions regarding the operation of the journal and particularly for the contents that are published. It meets periodically to oversee and monitor the evaluation process of the submissions received by the journal (see Policies-Peer Review Process) and to select the texts that will be published. The decisions regarding the rest of the editorial, operational and logistical processes are delegated to its coordinator.

  • Hence, the Coordinator serves as a representative of the board and is the one in charge of planning and implementing the activities of the journal in consensus with the editorial board. Together with the board, and in collaboration with the editor, the coordinator seeks to ensure the quality of the material that is published. At the same time, they aim at bolstering the academic, scientific and editorial standards, and enabling the continuous improvement of the journal.

  • The Editor is in charge of direct communication with authors, reviewers and readers in general. She collaborates directly with the Coordinator of the Editorial Board in carrying out the operations of the journal. The editor is, above all, responsible for the direct monitoring of the editorial processes that culminate in the publication of every issue of ELA

See Policies-Ethical Principles of the Editorial Board and its Coordinator.
