Lingüística e identidad nacional; algunas reflexiones

Klaus Zimmermann

Abstract

This article defines the objet of linguistic vis-a-vis other disciplines in language research. It establishes the link between language and national identity. An overview of the role of German Philology in the establishment of national identity is provided and then compared with Romance Philology in relation to the categories of self and other. A comparison of the German situation in the 19th century is made with that of Mexico in the 20th century and a proposal is made for the creation of a new national Mexican form of linguistics; which would generate a knowledge of the national self without the impediments of either a hispanic of indianist perspective.
