Conflictos lingüísticos en la Europa plurilingüe con una visión hacia 1993

Abstract

The first part of this article will deal with the concept of conflict and its application to multilinguistic European situations. The problems of minorities and urban multilingualism as well as linguistic conflicts will be analyzed using officially multilingual countries as examples. Attempts have been made by some multilingual countries; such as Belguium to avoid conflicts which stem from multilingualism. Despite the fact that Europe has had linguistic conflicts which date back to the XIX century; it became multilingual by 1993. Multiple language acquisition theories will be examined and serve as a basis for a discussion of reasonable multilinguialism. The final part of the article will offer a polemic view of future European multilingualism.
