Abstract


This article discusses the application of the markedness hypothesis from Universal Grammar (UG) theory to give a psycholinguistic explanation of the controversial phenomenon of LI transference in second language adquisition in adult learners. The first part of the article presents a definition of transference in terms of the markedness hypothesis as part of the model of parameter setting in second language adquisition in turn part of Chomsky's theory of Government and Binding or principles and parameters. The second part discusses the results of a study carried out with native speakers of Spaiiish learning Portuguese as a foreing language which supports the markedness hypothesis.
