María Eugenia Correa Breña

Abstract

The Communicative Language Teaching pronunciation approach is regarded; in this article; within a historical overview in which accent reduction has played different roles. The communicative approach is very influencial nowdays. It discards interest in accent reduction and focuses on intelligibility. The reasons and experimental data in favor of this point of view seem convincing. Nevertheless; two studies carried out by the author recently question the approches and methods in wich accent reduction is discarded without taking into account the learners ’ necessities. A subjective and objective needs analysis carried out in a communicative program at college level question the communicative approach considering the low scores in intelligibility of pronunciation and the learners' needs concerning accent reduction.
